Dykes Away!

smythe.jpgProto-feminist and tweed-wearing lesbian composer, Ethyl Smyth, got a little mouth-to-mouth from the American Symphony Orchestra on Sunday with a concert staging of her pirate opera, “The Wreckers.”

Funny, you’d think that pirating would be more of Britten’s territory.

Still, Bernard Holland’s review for The Times is fair in his estimation of Smyth’s actual talents:

Smyth’s music had nothing to tell the Romantic movement, then in its late middle age, that it did not already know. No new doors open. Seen coolly, her work is a document of a time, a synthesis drawing its ideas from others.

It seems like people often played her music cuz they were scared of her and her les-bionic militancy. Hot.
