DUmb Critic Hack Award: Terry Teachout on Jazzed Up Classical

summerseve2.jpgSo Terry Teachout is getting the big old DUCHY today for his self-inflated and cursory stab at correlating an apparent drought in the number of pop-artists that include classical music in their songs and…the entire fate of classical music.

So, like, a few examples come instantly to mind:

  • Janet Jackson, “Someone to Call My Lover,” uses Satie’s Gymnopedie No.1
  • Radiohead, “Idiotech,” uses electronic music by Paul Lansky
  • Dance club remixes of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Barber’s Adagio
  • A moment in Kate Bush’s “Sunset”, from her latest, Ariel, sounds like a definite reference to C.V. Stanford’s choral work “The Bluebird”
  • From Rufus Wainwright’s Want One, “Oh What A World” is based on Ravel’s Bolero

I can’t imagine how many hip-hop songs that I’ve never heard might be riffing on the classics. There’s so much music out there, it’s absurdly presumptuous of TT to assume that he would be aware of any and every instance of popular music’s homage to classical music.

My guess is that Teachout had a late-night hunch but didn’t really do any research. At the very least, he could have consulted the plethora of music bloggers who get into this kind of shit (Soho The Dog, a prime example).

And as for this comment:

Anyone who cares about the fate of classical music in America must remember that it cannot survive without the support of a democratic public that appreciates its beauty and believes in its significance.

Quite the contrary. As long as rich people continue to bequeath their fortunes to the classical arts, I assure you, they’ll keep on kickin’. (Or to paraphrase: our cultural centers don’t survive off of ticket sales, and everybody knows that.)
