Critics Award of the Day (CAD): Ginia Bellafante on “My First Time”

firsttime.jpgOh, Christ. This whole thing sounds like a bad idea.

No, C.C. didn’t see it, but by the sound of Ginia Bellafante’s Times review, any suspicions you have about the idea of a monologuey play based on a website where people write in missives about their premiere sexual encounter–are totally legit.

Here’s our favorite part:

“‘I think it’s great that there’s a Web site devoted to first times,’ a slide projection reads at the end of the play. ‘Maybe everyone will realize that this one brief experience doesn’t have to be a huge life-changing moment.’ But rape and incest, experiences that the show chronicles, are huge, life-changing moments. And they’re not the same as bumbling into the back seat of a car with your cute high school boyfriend. We don’t even need Oprah to remind us of that.”

But we do need Oprah to give us the car.
